Sermon Title: How to Stay Spiritually Engaged During Fasting and Prayer
Date: June 1, 2025
Theme: Our Month of Spiritual Awakening
Foundational Scripture:
“But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength…” — Isaiah 40:31
Understanding the Purpose of Fasting
Fasting is more than skipping meals—it’s a spiritual discipline where you set aside food to engage deeply with God. True fasting aligns your spirit, soul, and body with His will.
Key Questions for Spiritual Engagement
1. How Long Should I Fast?
There’s no fixed duration. Biblical examples:
• 1 day
• 3 days
• 21 days (Daniel)
• 40 days (Jesus)
Let the Holy Spirit lead you. Daniel fasted until revelation came (Daniel 10).
Acts 13:2–3 – “As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said…”
2. Why Am I Fasting?
Define your purpose. During this 21-day corporate fast, we are pressing in for revival and renewal. Be intentional—seek intimacy with God.
3. What Are the Benefits of Fasting?
• Amplifies prayer
• Releases anointing
• Brings clarity
• Opens spiritual vision
• Draws you closer to God
Matthew 17:21 – “This kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”
Staying Spiritually Engaged During the Fast
1. Create a Spiritual Routine
• Schedule time with God daily
• Jeremiah 29:13 – “You will seek Me and find Me…”
2. Feed on the Word
• Matthew 4:4 – “Man shall not live by bread alone…”
Let the Word nourish your spirit.
3. Guard Your Spirit
• Resist temptation
• Avoid distractions (TV, social media, idle talk)
• Protect your atmosphere with worship and the Word
4. Journal Your Journey
• Habakkuk 2:2 – “Write the vision…”
Document dreams, scriptures, and revelations.
5. Keep the Fire Burning
• Romans 12:11 – “Keep your spiritual fervor…”
Even in dry moments, press through in prayer and praise.
The Power of the Word
Jeremiah 15:16 – “Your words were found, and I ate them…”
Jeremiah 23:29 – “Is not My Word like fire… like a hammer?”
The Word:
• Breaks strongholds
• Renews the mind (Romans 12:2)
• Restores life
• Releases power
Habits to Maintain During the Fast
• Seek God early (Psalm 63:1)
• Avoid idle time
• Break the fast gently
• Create a worshipful space
• Confess the Word over your life
• Journal what God says
21-Day Declarations
I will seek the Lord and hear His voice.
I will feed my spirit with the Word of God.
I am being transformed by the renewing of my mind.
I will walk in spiritual strength and divine purpose.
I will run and not grow weary.
Dead things in me are coming back to life.
I receive the fire of God.
I hunger for His Word more than for food.
God is restoring my passion.
Lord, speak to me—I am listening.
